The Centered Practice Psychotherapy and Counselling

Therapy for Migration, Culture Shock, and Belonging

Moving to a new country changes more than your address. It can mean rebuilding your sense of who you are, your support system, and your day-to-day rhythm, often while missing people and places you can’t easily get back to.

What it can look like

Grief for the life, family, or career you left behind. Culture shock — feeling like you don’t fully belong here, but also like you no longer quite fit back home either. Loneliness even when you’re surrounded by people. Pressure to “make it” that leaves little room to process what the move actually cost you.

How therapy can help

Working with a therapist who understands the migration experience firsthand can make a real difference. We make space for what you’ve lost as well as what you’ve gained, work through the guilt or pressure many people carry, and build a sense of identity and belonging that doesn’t depend on being in one place.

My approach

As someone who has navigated migration myself, I offer sessions in Spanish and English — often both in the same conversation — for anyone in Ontario adjusting to a new country, culture, or version of themselves.

Want to go deeper than a technique?

If these techniques help but you feel like you need more, I'd be glad to talk. I offer online individual and couples therapy, in English and Spanish, across the province of Ontario.
